The 7th State of Osun House of Assembly will today be inaugurated by Governor Gboyega Oyetola.
The new Assembly has 26 members. 23 from the All Progressives Congress APC and 3 from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP.
The race for the speakership of the new Assembly has been a subject of debates in the media, among members of the public especially those of the ruling All Progressives Congress which has absolute majority in the parliament.
The first Speaker of the Assembly was Hon Adewale Afolabi from Ifelodun state Constituency who held sway between 1992 and 1993 in the aborted third republic. At the inception of the third republic, Prof Mojeed Alabi from Ejigbo state Constituency was elected speaker between 1999-2003.
In 2003, a lawyer from Ede North, Hon Adejare Bello was elected speaker who served 2 terms till 2011 before the incumbent Najeem Salaam from Ejigbo state Constituency, took the baton from him. Salaam is the outgoing speaker of the assembly who is expected to bow out officially today.
The State awaits the inauguration of the new lawmakers to be done by Governor Gboyega Oyetola and most importantly, the new speaker who could either be a fourth timer in the assembly, Hon Timothy Owoeye from Ilesa East touted as the one with huge support from the power brokers in Osun APC and Hon Babatunde Olatunji representing Ife North State Constituency for the second time.
