‘We Miss Aregbesola’: Nigerians React, Slam Minister Of Interior Over Public Holidays For Eid-El-Fitr
  • PublishedApril 9, 2024

Several reactions have followed the Federal Government’s declaration of an additional public holiday to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

Osun Defender recalls that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made a statement by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Aishetu Ndayako, declaring Tuesday, April 9th, and Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

However, in view of the declaration of Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitr day by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad, the Minister, therefore, declared Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Fitr.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, shared on the ministry’s X account on Tuesday

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, while congratulating the muslim Ummah for a successful completion of a month of spiritual rejuvenation, reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s (GCFR) firm commitment to providing a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all to thrive.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians have taken to the X platform to fault the declaration of the public holidays announced by the Minister of Interior.

Some individuals expressed their sentiment that they missed the procedural approach that former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, typically employed when declaring public holidays.

They noted that Aregbesola, known for his methodical decision-making, would not have hastily declared Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays, only to later add Thursday after the Sultan declared Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitr.

They suggested that, under Aregbesola’s leadership, such decisions would have been carefully considered and communicated to avoid confusion and inconvenience. The implication is that Aregbesola’s approach would have likely involved consultation and coordination to ensure coherence and efficiency in the declaration of public holidays, thereby mitigating any potential disruptions or inconsistencies.
