SSANU, NASU Strike Disrupts Academic Activities On OAU Campus
Academic activities at the Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile-Ife, have been put to a complete halt following the 7-day warning strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) over unpaid salaries.
It was learnt that the students who were set to resume lectures for the second semester on Monday, 18th March 2024, could not attend lectures because all the gates leading to OAU were locked by members of NASU and SSANU.
A student of the university who craved anonymity said, “I resumed school on Monday but couldn’t attend lectures. Since Monday, the school gates have been locked and only opened in the evenings.
“This is so sad. Lectures didn’t hold because of the strike. The campus looks so empty.”
However, sources within the management told OSUN DEFENDER that the resumption date has been shifted to next Monday due to the strike.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that NASU, and SSANU began the nationwide strike three days ago over alleged unfair treatment and disparity in the payment of salaries by the Federal Government.
The unions threatened to shut down hostels and power supply in universities across the country if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands before today, March 18, 2024.
The National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, said his members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars, have not been paid their 2022 arrears.
