Manchester City Declare Mahrez Fit For Chelsea Clash After Injury Scare

Manchester City have confirmed that their Algerian winger , Riyad Mahrez will be fit for the start of the Premier League season.

Mahrez sustained an ankle injury during City’s 3-2 International Champions Cup win over Bayern Munich , but is in contention to play in the Community Shield this  weekend, against Chelsea.

Indeed, there were fears over the former Leicester City star’s fitness after he was pictured returning to England on crutches, with Pep Guardiola also unsure of his fitness after the pre-season clash .

“I don’t know [the extent]. I wasn’t in the locker room. It was his ankle. We will see,” he told reporters post-match.

“I’m concerned for many things, for injured players, players who are still not here but I am so satisfied for what all of the guys on the tour have done.”

City, however, have now allayed those concerns.

“A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for next weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea,” read a statement .

Mahrez played in all three of City’s friendlies in America, and impressed alongside a depleted squad.

The 27-year-old played 179 times for Leicester City, winning the Premier League and scoring 48 goals, and providing 38 assists.

City face Chelsea on Sunday  and open their league campaign with a trip to Unai Emery’s Arsenal
