Man Jailed 21 Months For Impersonating Council Worker

A 52-year-old man, Ibraheem Najeem Adeleke has been sentenced to 21 months jail term for impersonation after spending seven months in remand.

He was arraigned on January 12, 2018 on five count charges bothering on impersonation, forgery, disrespecting the court and preventing the course of justice.

Adeleke had pleaded not guilty to charges brought against him during his first arraignment on January 12 and had subsequently been remanded in prison custody.

When the case was called for mention on Monday, and the charges were read to him again subsequent to his request, Adeleke changed his plea and admitted guilty to the charges.

Police prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Taiwo told the court that the convict presented himself as Afolabi Olamilekan Saka, a GL14 account officer of Ifelodun Local Government, Ikirun via a forged letter of promotion, dated September 4, 1989, September 4, 2013, I.D card and stood surety for one Oluwasegun Bolarinwa Kareem in charge no MOS/366C/2016.

When giving facts of the matter, Adegoke said he saw Adeleke in the premises of the court with a brown envelope in his hand with intent to come and do his illegal job of standing surety with illegal documents.

He said he arrested the convict and took him to his office where two different original copy of a letter of appointment in Ifelodun Local Government, a letter of promotion, and a copy of bail bond of the Federal High Court where he stood surety for one Taiwo, dated 15th March 2016.

ASP Adegoke said he also found various identity cards, including two Deming NG Limited I.D, Latin’s Security I.D, and a voter card, all bearing his actual name, Ibrahim Najeem Adeleke, as well as Ifelodun Local Government ID card which he used to impersonate one Olamilekan Saka for bail bonds.

He further said the offence committed is punishable under Sections 108,133,465 and 126 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. ll Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

Adeleke who had no legal representation admitted to the crime and pleaded for mercy.

Presiding Magistrate Modupe Awodele found the accused person guilty to the five count charges.

In her judgement, the accused person was sentenced to 21 calendar months imprisonment.
