How To Set Realistic Goals And Stay On Track

Everyone dreams big sometimes, but the difference between those who achieve their dreams and those who don’t is the steps in between. A practical example is someone aiming to achieve body fitness, the individual must devote time to do a certain number of exercises each day. The same is true for any dream. In order to achieve your goals, either personal or professional, you must make sure you are creating a realistic path.

Setting goals is fundamental to achieving personal and professional growth. Goals provide us with direction, motivation, and a sense of purpose. Without goals, we may find ourselves aimlessly wandering through life, lacking the focus and drive needed to accomplish our dreams and aspirations. As much as we set goals, it is however pertinent to approach them with a growth mindset, this is key to maximizing their power.

A growth mindset focuses on learning and improvement rather than static outcomes that do not yield results. It encourages flexibility, resilience, and perseverance when facing challenges. With a growth mindset, we view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failure and this empowers us to keep striving toward ambitious goals, continuously expand our abilities, and ultimately achieve our highest aspirations. Adopting a growth mindset transforms how we relate to goals, unlocking their full motivational potential.

One of the most significant benefits of setting goals is that it allows us to prioritize our time and energy. When we have a clear understanding of what we want to achieve, we can organize our resources and efforts to make progress towards those objectives. Goals help us to filter out distractions and focus on what truly matters.

Moreover, goals provide us with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. When we set and achieve goals, we gain a sense of pride and self-worth. This helps to boost our confidence and motivation, making it easier for us to tackle more significant challenges in the future.

In addition to these benefits, setting goals also helps us to identify our area of  strengths and weaknesses. By setting goals that challenge us, we can push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and develop new skills and capabilities. At the same time, goals can also reveal areas where we need to improve, allowing us to identify opportunities for personal and professional development.

However, in order to make our goals achievable, we must adopt the SMART template. The SMART template is an acronym for five powerful criteria which has been ptoven to highly effective approach for achieving success and making progress towards our objectives. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. By following these five criteria, we can set goals that are clear, focused, and achievable. Now, let’s delve I yo what each alphabet that makes up the template stand for:

The first criterion has its acronym as ‘S’ which stands for Specific. Well all have specifications in term of food, clothing, how we want our space to be decorated, in fact in the choice of spouse etc. The same applies to goals. Being specific with goals refers to setting goals that are clear and precise. This means that the goal should be well-defined and specific, leaving no room for ambiguity or confusion. For example, instead of setting a goal to a ace speaker, a specific goal would be to master the right pronunciation of 10 words a week.

The second criterion ‘M’ stands for Measurable. Measurable refers to setting goals that can be quantified.  This means that the goal should include specific parameters that can be used to measure progress and success. For example, if your goal is to improve your fitness level, you might measure progress by tracking your running speed, weight lifted, or endurance.

The third criterion ‘A’ stands for Achievable which refers to setting goals that are realistic and attainable. This means that the goal should be challenging but not so difficult that it’s impossible to achieve. It is okay to challenge yourself, but setting too cumbersome goals is tantamount to wasting time.  For example, setting a goal to run a marathon in a month, without prior training, would not be achievable. Thus, set clear cut goals but do not go easy such that you set goals that an individual below your level can easily deliver.

The fourth is criterion ‘R’- Relevant refers to setting goals that are aligned with our values, priorities, and overall vision. This means that the goal should be meaningful and relevant to our personal and professional growth. You don’t go about learning things has no importance to your field.For example, if your goal is to improve your public speaking skills, it should be relevant to your career aspirations or personal development.

The fifth and final criterion, Time-bound, refers to setting goals that have a specific deadline or timeline for completion. This means that the goal should be time-bound, providing us with a sense of urgency and motivation to make progress. For example, if your goal is to read a book, setting a deadline for completing it will help you stay on track and make progress toward your objective. Do not leave room for procrastination whatsoever.

You can’t reach a goal that you can’t define. If your goal is to achieve personal fitness, a specific goal would be to do a certain number of exercises or minutes of cardio each day. If your goal is to get a promotion, identify the position or raise you’re aiming for. If you want to become a better public speaker, specific goals might be to speak up during lunch or take on an upcoming presentation.
