Buhari’s Democracy Day Speech And Other Newspaper Headlines Today

Yesterday, May 29 was Nigeria’s 19th Democracy Day celebration with Nigerians including President Muhammadu Buhari issuing statements to felicitate with their fellow countrymen on the occasion.

NIGERIAN TRIBUNE leads with the story Power Supply: Nigerians Now Use Generating Set Less – Buhari. The President in his broadcast said that power supply has improved, necessitating less use of generators across the country. He is quoted to have observed that power generation reached its peak in 2017, when about 5, 223.3mw was generated and delivered.

Still on the Democracy Day speech, Reactions have been trailing President Muhammadu Buhari’s vow that the killer Herdsmen will be dealt with. On the VANGUARD newspaper this morning, Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Afenifere and Ohaneze are not happy with the president’s comments.

The former VP said those in government whose jobs were to keep the citizens safe should desist from making ridiculous excuses and engaging in diversionary finger-pointing. Afenifere through its spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin said the President’s statement is suspicious as his government has brought no one to justice over the killings in the country.

In the same vein, Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General, John Nnia Nwodo said Buhari trivalised the killing of Nigerians in the churches and their homes by armed herdsmen by referring to such incidents as farmers/herdsmen clashes. The GUARDIAN, DAILY SUN and DAILY INDEPENDENT also center on the backlashes the President is getting from the Democracy Day Address especially from the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party PDP.

Politics is the interest of The NATION today with the headline; Ex-nPDP: Stop Saraki’s Trial. This according to the paper was the core of issues raised during the meeting between Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and some of the ex-PDP leaders at the Aso Rock on Monday. It also looked into issues affecting the n-PDP members who say they were strategic to President Buhari’s victory in 2015.

The PUNCH has the frontpage story Three States. PANDEF Reject Buhari’s Water Resources Bill. The paper reports that Ekiti, Rivers and Cross River and PANDEF saying they are not in support of the Executive Bill sent to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.
