History was made on Sunday in Chile, as Gabriel Boric, became the country”s youngest-ever president-elect at 35.
Santiago exploded in celebration after Boric was announced the winner with an unexpectedly large victory over his far-right rival.
Boric’s challenger, Jose Antonio Kast, had 44 percent of the total vote, compared to Boric’s 56 percent. Kast even conceded before the final result was known.
Thousands of Chileans took to the streets of the capital and other cities after Kast’s concession.
Fireworks lit the skies for hours with the people brandishing pro-Boric placards and waving the rainbow LGBTQ flag while shouting: “Viva Chile!”
