Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has admitted he hopes he can “checkmate” Lionel Messi at the 2022 World Cup final.
However, the 37-year-old insists lifting the trophy will not end the ‘GOAT’ debate.
Neither Ronaldo nor Messi has won the greatest prize in football.
If Portugal and Argentina both win their respective groups, the pair wouldn’t face each other until the December 18 final.
The two long-time rivals posed together for a game of chess in a Louis Vuitton ad ahead of the tournament.
“Checkmate we do in life, it’s not just in chess. And I do it often.
“I don’t know how to be direct about it, but I’d like to be the one to do the checkmate against him [Messi]. It would be beautiful to happen; it already happened in a chess game. In football it would be even more [beautiful],” Ronaldo said.
