UPDATED: Massive Turnout As Osun Holds Historic Local Government Parliamentary Election

The d-day is here. Today, Saturday, 27th January, 2018 is the date for the much anticipated historic local government parliamentary elections in the State of Osun. The elections is historic in the sense that, it will be the first time a state in accordance with Section 7 of the Constitution define a parliamentary structure for its Local Governments with the first official elections.

Today’s polls is to elect the councillors to represent each wards in the Local Governments and the newly created Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and Area Councils created by the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola in 2016 after due legal process. In the arrangement, the elected councillors today will in-turn at the point of their inauguration elect among themselves the Chairman of the said council area.

The Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) revealed that out of the 389 wards across the state that elections will be held, actual voting will hold in 71 wards, as 318 councillorship positions have been presented unopposed.

The Commission Chairman, Otunba Segun Oladitan, during a press conference held to sensitise the public on the level of preparedness for the council polls said the commission registered 36 political parties for the upcoming polls and only 18 returned their forms.

He also revealed that, 12 of the political parties that had earlier submitted their forms also withdrew from the race leaving the space for Labour Party, All Progressive Congress, Accord Party, Social Democratic Party and Allied Congress Party of Nigeria.

The Commission Chairman revealed that the spread is as follow: Osun-Central, 6; Osun-West, 13 and Osun-East; 52 wards, while the spread for the unopposed candidates was Osun-Central, 128; Osun-West, 117; and Osun-East, 73.

Going by the analysis, the election would be keenly contested in Osun East particularly in Ile-Ife and its environ where voting would be conducted in 52 wards.

At 7:28AM when our correspondent, Toba Adedeji visited 5 polling units at Eketa ward, Osogbo Local Government in Osun Central, officers of OSIEC are yet to be at the respective polling units although Security personnel were on ground at all the unit in the area. But by 7:50AM, some officers of OSIEC arrived some of the polling units.

However, the presiding officer for Unit 8 who identified himself as Oparinde Micheal while addressing journalists disclosed that some sensitive materials like the ballot papers and voters register has not yet gotten to his polling unit. 

Oladimeji said, “We have with us now the ballot box, stamp ink and some others stationary we needed but but we are yet to receive ballot papers, voters register and some other forms.

09.59 AM Voting has started at Ward 13, Osogbo Local Government council area of the State of Osun as voters trooped out. Kazeem Mohammed reports that here is massive turnout of voters at Ward 13 Osogbo Local Government council area of Osun.

Voting started around 8:30 am in majority of the units in the ward as election materials arrived earlier enough in unit 1, 6, 9, 10 and 12. Two political parties, APC and LP are contesting for the councillorship seats of the ward.

It is the only Ward where voting is taking place in the entire Osogbo Local Government. The returning Officer for the ward, Oyewumi Oluwasegun said so far, the situation of things is normal. He said, though there was no problem, but there is need for more security to control the crowd at the unit.

He appealed to the electorate to maintain law and order

11.17 AM Kazeem Mohammed reports that there was a massive turnout of voters at Ward 6 unit’ 1 Akinlalu town hall, Ife North LG. At the unit, those with temporary permanent voters cards were not allowed to vote because their names are not on the voters register.

This has started causing agitations by the affected voters. The party agents of the APC and Accord party expressed satisfaction with the processes so far.

At 11: 07AM, their was a large turnout at Ward 10, Unit 6 Akarabata in Ife. Electorate came out in mass to exercise their right of franchise. Also, the voting exercise is running to close as some OSIEC officers are spotted sitting on the floor idle. But voters are still loitering around.

Former member House of Representatives,  Hon. Rotimi Makinde who is a chieftain under All Progressive Congress who is at the polling unit said he is optimistic about the election. 

Meanwhile, some shops were opened and they are selling food, snacks, drinks and other assorted sweet to voters.

Shina Abubakar tells us at 12.20pm that Counting of votes is already going in Ijio ward 1unit 5, ife central local government. Thing are orderly in the unit. Former Commissioner For Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism, Sikiru Ayedun commended the voters and OSIEC officers for adhering to the election guidelines.

01.45 PM – Toba Adedeji says there is a little distraction to voting in Iremo III in Ile Ife as miscreants who have not been identified tried to disrupt voting. Although, calm seems to have been restored, the Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Senator Babajide Omoworare and the Police DPO in the zone are also seen in this picture trying to calm the situation.

Both the Accord Party and the APC are pointing accusing fingers at each other for the empasse.

2. 20 PM Police Storm Major Streets In Ile Ife As LG Election Continues

Men of the Nigerian Police Force on Saturday stormed the major streets of Ile Ife as voting continued in the local government parliamentary election.

Electoral materials and Osun State Independent Electoral Commission OSIEC ad-hoc electoral officials for the election had arrived a bit behind schedule in most polling booths and units across the town.

Officials of the OSIEC promised as at 10.30 am that areas not yet having these materials would soon be supplied after clearing some logistic problems.

At Iremo, Mayfair, Parakin and other areas in Ife Central Local Government Area, officials and voting materials arrived polling units some minutes after 9:00am and accreditation and voting started simultaneously.

Men of the police, DSS, Civil Defence corps were seen patrolling the ancient city of Yoruba land, Ile Ife to maintain law and order during the exercise.

2.45 PM Osun LG Polls: Commissioner, Chief Of Staff Laud Massive Turn Out

The State of Osun Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, has lauded the people of the state for coming out en masse to participate in the Local Government elections.

Adelani said the election was peaceful and successful based on the turn out and conduct of the electorate.

Baderinwa while speaking with journalists in Obaagun, Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun, said he marvelled at the turn out of voters at the various wards he monitored.

“I marvelled at the number of people that turnout at the various wards. Even reports reaching me from other areas of the state indicates good turnout.

“This success was because government of the state has done everything and put in place necessary machinery to make the election successful.

“Everything was done by the government as if it was a general election and I am happy the people came out to show they are with us and with our party.” he said.

This is even as the Chief of Staff to the State Government, the Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, in his own remarks, commended the Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) for promptly deploying election materials to the voting units and centers.

Oyetola said the turnout of voters has also been quite impressive based on the record of voters at polling units he had visited in his town of Iragbiji in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun.

“The election has been peaceful, fair and free. The turnout has been quite impressive too. People turned out in large number without manipulation. I think democracy is actually growing and things are getting better day by day.” he said
