Christians Celebrate the Death of Christ
Christians across the country, on Friday, celebrated Good Friday to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Some members of Our Lady of Holy Rose at the Ogba area of Lagos were seen demonstrating the Passion of Christ while members of the St. Dominic Catholic Church in the Yaba area of the city dramatised the experience of Jerusalem women during the crucifixion of Jesus.
In a similar vein, parishioners of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church demonstrated the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with His disciples in Suleja, Niger State.
Similar enactments were done by members of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Ikorodu, Lagos, and St. Peter Catholic Church, Bauchi.
A large crowd of worshippers also gathered to watch the demonstration of the Passion of Christ in Abeokuta, Ogun State , in celebration of Good Friday.
A clergy, Rev. Fr. Richard Popoola, who spoke at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bashorun, Ibadan, Oyo State, following the station of the Cross held to depict the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, said, “Good Friday is the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus.”
He said, “It is a day that stands out in everything about our Christian faith; Christ came to this world in order to redeem us and this power of redemption happened on Good Friday.
“When we think of what Christ did for us, Christians should learn to let go and commit everything in the hands of God.”
The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Hillary Okeke, also urged Christians in Nigeria to use the occasion of this year’s Easter to promote peaceful co-existence in the country.
Okeke made the call in his Easter message entitled, ‘Easter; Victory over Enmity and Violence’ at Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Nnewi on Friday.
He said Christians should take a cue from Jesus Christ, who demonstrated love for humanity when in spite of the suffering ahead of him, submitted himself to those who humiliated and killed him.
Meanwhile, Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, and the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, on Friday urged Nigerians to reflect deeply on the life of Jesus Christ and the situation of the country.
Ayade, in his Easter message, urged Christians to use the significance of the period to cultivate the spirit of compassion and forgiveness, saying that only these virtues could help in building a strong and indivisible Nigeria.
