African Ministers Hail President Buhari’s Economic Policies
President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic agenda, particularly the one on Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), has gotten the commendation of African ministers of labour, employment and social affairs.
Vanguard reports that the minister commended Buhari at the 3rd biannual special technical committee on social development, labour and employment under the auspices of the African Union Commission at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The assistant director, press in the ministry of labour and employment, Iliya Rhoda Ishaku, in a statement on Sunday, April 7, 2019, disclosed that the ministers also extolled the Nigeria’s minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige for championing the cause of the continent at the Governing Board of the International Labour organization(ILO) since his election in 2017.
Chris Ngige at the event noted that the economic development agenda of the Buhari administration was tailored towards a concurrent growth of the three-tier federal structures of national, states and local governments in line with the diversity of the nation.
He noted some of the measure the Buhari administration took in in reviving the Nigerian economy which slipped into recession in the first and second quarter of 2016.
…“We boosted agriculture and raised the capacity of the nation to feed herself, to the extent that importation of rice for example, dropped by 95%. The same goes for sorghum. This decisive inward look was pivoted on the elastic efforts of government which the Central Bank of Nigeria piloted through the Anchor Borrowers Programme in agriculture,” he said.
Ngige stated that the efforts of the Buhari administration in the last four years has charted a new course for Nigeria with the results of that giant strides made manifest in core sectors of agriculture, anti-corruption , employment generation, infrastructural development and war on insurgency.
The minister however warned that Africa would remain undeveloped if drastic measures are not taken by the leaders to fiercely tackle many challenges of underdevelopment facing the continent.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, April 3, declared that the federal government has implemented no fewer than 140 reforms on ease of doing business in the past three years.
Osinbajo said this at the 2nd Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) Awards 2019 held at the state House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
