Woman Who Chose N300,000 Cash Over Surgery To Remove Goitre Dies

A woman simply identified as Mrs. Folakemi from Ede, Osun State, who preferred cash of N300,000 instead of free surgery to remove the goitre that had afflicted her for years, is dead.

Folakemi had, in November 2023, sought financial assistance at the State Secretariat, Abere for her condition.

However, a medical team that came across Folakemi offered her free surgery.

But Folakemi reportedly declined the medical assistance and instead asked that the money raised be handed to her.

She reportedly went back to her village with the hope that the state government which had promised to assist her, would fulfil the pledge.

According to media reports, a director of a nongovernmental organisation who had taken interest in the case was able to convince Folakemi to let go of the money and have the operation done.

However, the surgery which was done a few days ago was reportedly unsuccessful, leading to Folakemi’s death.
