The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has distanced itself from claims suggesting that its President, Damilola Omoboriowo, was listed as a beneficiary of rice palliative distribution facilitated by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement.

Osun Defender recalls that Asefon had earlier announced the distribution of rice in Abuja to Student Union Government (SUG) Presidents across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Asefon explained that the initiative was part of the President’s ongoing efforts to support students and their communities.

He recalled a similar gesture in December 2024, when student leaders received palliative support during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In a release made available to newsmen, OAU SU President Omoboriowo debunked the report, describing it as false and misleading.

He stated, “I did not receive any rice palliative as indicated in the circulating document, nor will I accept such claims.”

The SU President emphasised that the focus of his administration remains on advocating for students’ welfare and addressing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.

He further highlighted the need for government efforts to be directed at reducing tuition burdens, improving infrastructure, and enhancing opportunities for students rather than distributing palliatives.

“While the government may have intentions of goodwill, it is imperative that efforts be channeled towards the betterment of education, which is the backbone of national development,” he added.

The statement also urged the general public and students to disregard the circulating claims, assuring them of the Union’s commitment to accountability, integrity, and the interests of students.
