Stampede: Injured NSUK Varsity Students Discharged From Hospital

At least 22 students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, who sustained varying degrees of injury occasioned by a stampede at the university’s convocation square, have been discharged from the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.

Two students died while 24 others were hospitalised following a stampede at the convocation square last Friday before the distribution of rice palliative donated by the Nasarawa State government could commence.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the palliative distribution was part of steps taken by the government to cushion the hardship experienced by citizens due to fuel subsidy removal.

In an interview with Daily Trust in Lafia on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Humanitarian Affairs, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Mrs. Margaret Elayo, said 22 of the students who sustained injuries in the stampede had been discharged.

“As of yesterday (Tuesday), when I visited the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, only two students were on their hospital beds responding to treatment and are in stable conditions. One of them had a fracture on his right leg and the other one had a bruise on her face. I spoke to them.

“However, I was told that two other students went to another hospital for a check-up for scanning, and I have not got any feedback on whether they had gone home from there or not,” she said.

The commissioner said moving forward, the state government would map out the best modalities to prevent stampedes and the loss of lives in the future.

“The modalities we had used in the distribution of the palliatives to students was the best move, but sadly the chaos led to the death of two students,” she added.
