South-West United on Restructuring- Obasa

Reacting to a recent stateent by a former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo hat what Nigeria needs is a ‘ restructuring of the mind’ as opposed to restructuring as clamoured for by many, the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, has said the people of the South-West are in support of the calls for Nigeria’s restructuring in a more tangible sense.

Obasa told journalists in Yola, Adamawa State on Friday “I do not think the South-West is at a crossroads. Everybody has a constitutional right to his or her opinion as demonstrated by our former president (Obasanjo).

“He believes that there should be a restructuring of the mind. But the generality of South-West people want restructuring in terms of governance. It was displayed a few days ago in Ibadan, when practically all the leaders in the zone gathered in the ancient city.

“All the governors and everybody you can think of in the South-West want restructuring.”

Meanwhile, speakers of the 36 state Houses of Assembly have urged the leadership of the National Assembly to quicken the process of transmitting the constitutional amendment bills to the various state legislatures for their own contributions and adoption.

The chairman of the speakers’ conference, Mr. Samaila Kamba, stated this while addressing journalists at the end of their meeting in Yola.

Ismaila explained that his colleagues wished to use the current efforts at amending the 1999 Constitution to further strengthen the unity of the country.

He said the excitement and hopes that Nigerians placed on the current efforts at amending the constitution was an indication that the proposed amendments were important to the unity of the country.

The chairman said, “Our purpose of coming to Yola after the Adamawa State Government offered to host us is to continue our normal business of running the conference and to deliberate on issues that relate to the alteration of the constitution.

“We shall continue to deliberate on this important issue, which all Nigerians are excited about. The people are hoping that the alteration of the constitution will bring progress and prosperity to their lives.

“Right now, we are urging the National Assembly to hasten the process of transmitting the approved bills to the various state Houses of Assembly for our own contributions and adoption.”
