SON Regulates Activities Of Block Makers In Ogun Over Rampages Of Buildings Collapse

The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has revealed its readiness to fish out any block maker who is fond of using substandard material in block making.

The Ogun State Coordinator of the organization, Engr. Jerome Otene, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of the state, said the exercise was part of efforts by the organization to find a lasting solution to the incessant building collapse in the country.

Engr. Otene explained that the exercise will cover the five local governments in the Ogun West Senatorial District of the state, adding that it is high time the organisation stepped up its surveillance in order to put an end to avoidable loss of lives that usually follow building collapse.

According to him, “for the sacredness of lives involved in building collapse, we are ready to monitor the quality of materials been used in block making”.

“We are not going to allow any individual or group of people with greedy mindset who have little or no respect for human lives to continue wasting lives of innocent citizens”.

Engr Otene stated further that SON will be moving around with the support of security operatives, and the Task Force of NABMON.
“During the exercise, whoever is found culpable would be handed over to the appropriate authority for proper prosecution.

“As a way of making them abide by the SON standard of block making, we are going to organize a workshop to orientate and remind the qualified ones the right and proper way to identify, and make use of quality and standard material for block making, and the needed technical-know-how”.

“Our objective is to assist the association in making its members engaging in the service of building the nation not otherwise”.

“So, as a matter of concern, we would be looking forward to see certified makers of brick, culvert, ring and interlocking tiles in their numbers to attend the workshop”.

“Tentatively, the workshop would come up in the month of August this year where the pro’s and con’s of brick making will be unravelled, such that the artisans themselves will know how best to produce a standard brick at affordable cost which we are sure will, in turn, make our society safer”, Otene stated.
