Shi’ites: IGP Assures President Buhari Situation Under Control

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, to prevent the breakdown of law and order following a clash between members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, and security agents in Abuja.

Speaking with journalists after a meeting with the president, Adamu said he was summoned to give the president a briefing on the Shi’ites’ protests.

He said Buhari ordered that security be provided for every Nigerian.

“We came this morning to brief Mr President on the security situation in the country, especially the activities of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). Just to give him an update of what is happening in the country vis a vis their activities,” Adamu said.

“Specifically we briefed him of the incessant act coming out of this group of people, protesting here and there. We briefed him on the fact that we have been able to curtail their excesses and to let him understand that everything is under control.

“The president asked us to make sure we provide security for every citizen of this country and not to leave any space that some group of people will create breakdown of law and order.

“So, the charge by Mr President is that we must provide security for every Nigerian.”

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) had taken to the streets of Abuja to demand the release of Ibrahim Zakzaky, their leader, who has been in detention since 2015.

The protest, which began from NITEL junction at Wuse zone 2, was disrupted by armed policemen who cordoned off the road leading to the national assembly and three arms zone.

Bullets were fired at the protesters as they advanced towards the Eagle Square. The police had chased the protesters all over the streets shooting sporadically.

The situation sparked tension as workers fled while motorists abandoned their vehicles on the road.
