Senator Basiru Cautions Journalists On Promoting Disunity

 

Journalists in Nigeria have been cautioned against promoting anybody fanning embers of discord in the country, just as he charged them to avoid spiteful headlines and rabble-rousers with ulterior motives.

The Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Dr. Ajibola Basiru gave the charge when the executive members of the National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, Osun Chapter, paid a courtesy call on him at his Constituency Office in Osogbo, capital of the State of Osun.

Basiru, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, charged the women journalists on professionalism of factual news and shunning misinformation.

He said that the time had come for NAWOJ to partner relevant stakeholders to create policies and laws that would guide against fake news and misinforming the society.

Basiru called for unity and development in the country, saying that there is need for unity to be promoted by the journalists.

The Doctor of Law added that those beating the drums of war have ulterior intents against the country, stressing that no matter the challenges on infrastructure deficiency, technology challenges, security or inequality, among others, going to war is not the remedy.

Earlier in her address, the State of Osun Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs. Motunrayo Ayegbayo, commended the senator for giving qualitative representation to his constituency, applauding him for being gender-friendly.

Ayegbayo emphasised that the association, which is an advocate for information, women / children development, among others, has its beam on activities for the overall benefit of the people, and will not rest on its oars in fulfilling its obligations to the society.
