In its sustained effort to rid the ancient city of Ile-Ife of criminals and their accomplices, the Police Area Command of Ife combed brothels in the town last Thursday.
According to OSUN DEFENDER correspondent, who witnessed the exercise at the “Niger brothel” located in Aderemi area of the city, more than 20 middle age commercial sex workers were hauled into police van by men attached to the area command’s office.
The medium’s investigation at the scene revealed that the exercise became necessary as police tip off revealed that most of the sex workers serve as informants, hideouts and arm keepers for the criminals.
It was also gathered that some suspects that are in police custody confessed that most of the sex workers were used to extract information from unsuspecting customers that seek their patronage which are later divulged to criminal suspects.
A police source said that the raiding of brothels in Sabo area, Ilare and Moore had been yielding results, as they have had volunteered information about some “wanted criminals” in the area.
The source confided in the medium that other black spots within the jurisdiction of the command would be raided with a view to checkmating criminal activities in the area.
Some of the suspects interrogated by the medium said that they are hairdressers while others denied being commercial sex workers but rather visitors to their relation who lives in the hotel.
OSUN DEFENDER investigation at the ancient city revealed that since the commencement of the exercise in the town about two weeks ago, criminal activities had been on hold.
Residents admonished that the police should intensify efforts to bring about peace and security in the ancient city and its environment.
