Parties Prepare For Kogi, Imo Guber Polls And Other Newspaper Headlines Today

Issues surrounding the upcoming governorship elections in Bayelsa, Ondo, Kogi and Imo states, with political players intensifying strategic moves ahead of the November 11 governorship polls, dominate the front pages of Nigerian Newspapers, today October 8.

Tribune reports that in a bid to establish allegations of forgery against President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar has sought the permission of the supreme court to file fresh evidence in his appeal. The newspaper says Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has inaugurated a nine-man reconciliation committee to restore relations between Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo and Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy.

Sun details the environmental disaster looming in the coal city of Enugu. The newspaper says Douye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa, has accused APC’s Timipre Sylva of plotting to cause mayhem during the November 11 governorship election.

Daily Trust says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied withdrawing from the appeal process in the ongoing Kano governorship election petition case. The newspaper reports that Mustapha Ahmed, the director general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has said that the recent release of water from the Cameroon Lagdo dam will exacerbate floods in eight Nigerian states.

Guardian highlights how Nigerians continue to mount pressure on Tinubu to fix dilapidated federal highways. The newspaper says the Northern Defence Network (NDN), a youth group, has condemned calls from certain quarters for the resignation of Mele Kyari, the chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Independent reports that the federal government has indefinitely suspended the N-Power programme over irregularities. The newspaper says the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said that it is now ready to negotiate with the FG on the peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria through a United Nations (UN) supervised referendum.
