Parents Kick Over Makinde’s Plan To Hand Over School To Old Students

Parents of students of Government College, Ibadan under the aegis of Parents Teachers Association (PTA), have kicked against the decision of the Oyo State government to handover the school to the Old Boys Association.

The parents who carried placards and sang solidarity songs staged the protests to the state secretariat, saying the intention of the Old Boys in taking over the school was suspicious.

Some of the placards read, “Governor Seyi Makinde (GSM) deliver us from the capitalist GCI Old Boys”, “Handing over Government College to Old Boys will only serve the rich and not the poor”, “GCI Old Boys are after the land resources of Government College Ibadan”, “GSM deliver us from land grabbers’, “Government College is a community based school not for the selected few”, “GCI Old Boys want to privatise GCI”, “Rescue Government College from Babalakin”, among others.

The state government in a bid to hand over the school to the Old boys under the aegis of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) for management, operation, and development recently signed an agreement with the association.

The handover agreement between the government and the Incorporated Trustees of the GCIOBA followed the Old Boys Association’s request to manage, operate and develop the school in order to maintain and sustain its legacy.

Meanwhile, more details have emerged on the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Oyo State Government and the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) regarding the operation of the school.

The MOU signed between the two parties concerns the management, operation and development of the school.
