Some students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife have rejected the compulsory sale of the LIB 001 manual to freshmen and direct entry students at a staggering cost of N5,000.

In a statement released by the Student Union leadership on Sunday, which was signed by Hon. Oladapo Olakunle, Speaker of the Great Ife Students’ Representative Council (SRC); Hon. David Joshua, Deputy Speaker; and Hon. Alawode Ewaoluwa, Clerk, the students described the sale as exploitative and contrary to their interests.

They said the sale of handouts violates the directive of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), who clearly prohibited such transactions on campus.

“The sale of handouts is strictly prohibited, and on this basis, we strongly advise students to refrain from making any further payments for the LIB manual,” they said.

The Students’ Union outlined a list of demands, including the immediate cessation of all handout sales, the termination of compulsory manual purchases, and a refund of all monies already collected from students for the LIB manual.

The union also called for the sale of essential learning materials to be restricted to the University Bookshop, ensuring affordability and transparency.

Furthermore, the union highlighted that learning materials have historically been efficiently accessed via PDFs and vowed to take decisive action against any individual or department found flouting these regulations.

The leadership reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Great Ife student body and restoring normalcy to campus operations.
