Messi Wins 8th Ballon d’or

Argentina forward, Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his career at a star-studded ceremony in Paris on Monday.

Messi, 36, succeeds Karim Benzema as the winner of the prize awarded for his performances last season when he inspired his country to glory at the World Cup.

Earlier in the evening, Argentina national team goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez won the Lev Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper of the past year.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was chosen ahead of Real Madrid’s Belgian Thibaut Courtois, Barcelona’s German Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Manchester City’s Brazilian Ederson Moraes and Al-Hilal’s Moroccan Yassine Bounou.
