May Day And A Clarion Call

Ibrahim Basith, Osogbo, State of Osun

I wish to congratulate workers in the state of Osun and Nigeria as a whole on the celebration of the 2018 Workers Day. While some opinions have said that there was nothing to celebrate, I still believe that there are lots to celebrate, with a view to reviewing the past and designing the road for a way forward.

While I particularly congratulate the workers in the service of Osun and commend them for their perseverance in the face of hard economic period, I must also charge the government to do more in taking care of the welfare of the state workforce.

However, the government of Osun deserves commendation on the issue of the Modulated salaries to ensure that each worker has something to take home at the time it was difficult for the government to perform its statutory obligations due to the damage that had been done to the country’s economy.

It is a public knowledge that the state government could not be totally blamed for the woes that hit the economy then, as it was a general situation across the country.

That does not mean that the government should not put in extra efforts interms of revenue generation locally to ensure that it has capacity to perform its obligations, particularly salary payment, as the workers deserve their pays.

To generate revenue locally is not for politicians alone, the major part of the job must be done by the workers in various ministries and agencies of government. We must help the government to help ourselves.
