Ifon/Ilobu: Act Now, Prevent Further Bloodshed, Stakeholder Urges Adeleke

The Student Union President, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Habeebullahi Tijani, has called on the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke to find a lasting solution to the ongoing communal crisis between Ifon and Ilobu communities in the state to avoid further bloodshed.

Tijani in a letter to the Governor on Wednesday, said the situation if not properly managed would not only threaten the safety and security of the affected communities but also hamper economic activities and undermine the social fabric of the state.

Osun Defender had reported that the two communities had been having clashes over land disputes, a situation that has led to loss of life.

Also, the state Governor on Wednesday, imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the towns.

Tijani in the letter appealed to leaders of the two communities to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence.

He further advised the Governor to engage the Federal Government for assistance in resolving the crisis.

The letter further reads, “The situation has reached a critical point, with incidents of loss of life and properties occurring within a span of just 24 hours, despite the fact that some lives have been lost over years on this issue. It’s high time we find positive and lasting solution to this. Urgent action is needed to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace to these communities.

“The ongoing conflict has led to a breakdown of social order and has caused immense suffering for the residents. Innocent lives have been lost, families have been displaced, and properties have been destroyed. The situation not only threatens the safety and security of the affected communities but also hampers economic activities and undermines the social fabric of the state.

“I kindly request that you convene a high-level meeting with the leadership of each community involved, as well as representatives from the security agencies, to discuss the underlying causes of the conflict and find a lasting solution.

“Furthermore, I urge you to engage the Federal Government and draw their attention to the urgent need for assistance in resolving this crisis. The involvement of the federal government will ensure the allocation of adequate resources, personnel, and expertise to tackle the complex issues at hand.

“I also call upon the security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force and other relevant agencies, to increase their presence in the affected communities and take immediate steps to restore law and order. The deployment of additional security personnel, establishment of temporary peacekeeping units, and strict enforcement of the rule of law will serve as a deterrent to further violence.

“Moreover, I implore the leadership of each community involved in the dispute to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. It is essential that all parties come together to seek common ground, foster understanding, and find a mutually acceptable resolution to the territorial allocation dispute. Promoting intercommunity dialogue and mediation efforts can help restore trust and harmony among the affected communities.”
