Flood: Iree Residents Call For State, LG Intervention

RESIDENTS of Iree, the headquarters of Boripe North Local Council Development Area, State of Osun, yesterday, called on the State and Local Governments to come to their aid over incessant flood being experienced during downpour in the community.

The residents who spoke with OSUN DEFENDER said the flooding, if not urgently curbed, might lead to loss of lives and property in the nearest future.

According to the residents, there is a stream around the poly junction area which usually overflows and causes flooding.

The residents also said lack of a proper drainage system around BHS to Polytechnic Junction is the major cause of the flooding, adding that erosion that is supposed to be channelised has found free ways in the areas.

One of the residents, Olabamiji Ayodeji said: “If you look at the drainage from BHS to Poly Junction, you will see that it is not properly constructed and that is the major cause of the flooding.

“There is a stream around the poly junction and whenever there is a downpour, the water overflows into the road and in the process destroys things”.

A household utensils trader at Obada market, Mrs. Folashade Kayode, while lamenting her loss, said the flood occurrence during last downpour washed away some of her goods.

Kayode appealed to both the state and local governments authorities to find a lasting solution to the incessant flood occurrence in the town.

She said: “The last downpour we witnessed here caused some damages. I lost some of my goods to the flooding. I wasn’t in the shop when the rain started and before I got back, the flood had already taken over the road.

“The flood washed away some of my goods when I was trying to pack them in the shop. I got injured when trying to salvage the goods from getting washed away and I’m just recovering from the injury.

“I am appealing to both the state and local governments authorities to find a lasting solution to this. Flood is not something to take with levity hand and if not properly attended to now, it may lead to major disaster in the nearest future.”
