A fire outbreak occurred at a chemical factory, Megadot Nigeria Limited, located within the premises of the Ondo State Trade Fair Complex, Akure, on Friday night and destroyed goods worth about N100m.

The company had in stock different kinds of chemicals used for the production of paints, thinner lacquer and some other chemical products.

It was, however, gathered that no life was lost in the inferno.

According to an eyewitness, the fire incident happened as a result of power fluctuation by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company on Friday night.

The eyewitness further explained that it took the quick intervention of the men of the Ondo State Fire Service before the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading to other buildings within the Trade Fair Complex.

The eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We noticed the fire around 10pm and we immediately called the attention of the owner of the factory and the fire service men.

“The fire service men responded promptly but the fire had already wreaked havoc on the building; many powerful chemicals in the company had already gone up in flames before the arrival of the fire service men.”

The State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Taofeek Abdulsaalam, who visited the scene of the incident, said preliminary investigation indicated that the fire outbreak was caused by power surge.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph, also confirmed the incident but said nobody died in the incident.
