Fear Grips As Hausa Traders Clash With Fulani In Delta

There was tension in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta state after Hausa traders and Fulani herders clashed.

It was gathered that the altercation reportedly occurred at a market in Amukpe along Benin-Warri road. The development led to the destruction of some stalls at the market.
The confusion followed an alleged stabbing of a Hausa trader by a Fulani herder. About 10 people sustained injuries during the altercation.
Speaking with journalists, Ibrahim Umoru, a Hausa trader at the market, said the herder mistook the Hausa trader for a thief.

Umoru said they retaliated to show the herders that “we are not fools”.
“Maybe he [the Fulani man] thought the boy came to steal from them. He did not ask why he (Hausa trader) was there,” The Punch quoted the trader as saying.
“The matter came to us this morning and we cannot just sit there and watch them attack us every time. We want to tell them that we are not fools.”
It was learnt that the police have since put in place measures to restore order in the area.
