Excursion Tragedy: 25 Students Teachers Crushed To Death And Other Newspaper Headlines Today

 

No fewer than 28 people including 25 students, three teachers of Government Comprehensive Day Secondary School (GCDSS), Misau, Bauchi State, and a driver, were crushed to death by a trailer yesterday. DAILY SUN gathered that the students and their teachers were travelling to Gidan Dan Hausa, Kano, Kano State, for an excursion inside a commercial Hummer Toyoto bus, when they had a collision with the trailer at about 10am. The accident occurred at Gaya village in Kano State, and the victims were Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 and 2 students of GCDSS, Misau, with three of their teachers.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said President Muhammadu Buhari is in a trance. This is just as herdsmen struck again in Osun and Ondo states, sacking a council secretariat and burning a farm settlement. Soyinka said he came to his conclusion based on “unforced errors,” adding that the President’s body language had aggravated killings by herdsmen in the country.

Fulani herdsmen in Benue and Nasarawa states are asking for more time to move grazing reserves with support from Federal Government. This appears to be a request from the herders to be granted temporary respite from the Benue State anti-Open grazing law.

NEW TELEGRAPH says Herdsmen Invade Ondo, Sack LG Secretariat. Like a Scene from the Hollywood movie, armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen yesterday invaded Akure South Local Government Secretariat in Akure, the Ondo State capital, sacked the workers and paralysed activities. This came as the paramount ruler in Akure, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to call his men to order to prevent reprisal by his subjects.

 

The GUARDIAN also reports that Northern Groups Demand Emergency Rule In States. Following an emergency meeting, yesterday, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Taraba, Kaduna, Benue and Zamfara States to curb bloody clashes between farmers and herdsmen. It also demanded the suspension of political structures and the appointment of administrators to run the states’ affairs until security is restored. The Spokesman, Mallam Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, who disclosed the group’s position on key national issues, warned that dire consequences await President Buhari and other public office holders particularly from the North in the 2019 polls, if they fail to take decisive steps to arrest the level of insecurity in the country.

The Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka on Tuesday, said unforced errors of Mohammadu Buhari led administration made him to conclude that the president is under a trance, adding that he would not mince words to tell him same if given the opportunity to see him. Soyinka made the comment at a press briefing in Lagos, during a press conference on the increasing agitation across the country, following attacks by armed herdsmen on farming communities.
