Court Remands Man For Stealing N4.5m, Arson

An Osogbo Magistrate Court has remanded one Raheem Oluwatoyin in prison for setting a company ablaze.

Magistrate Olowolagba Adekunle who issued the remand order during the arraignment of the accused person in Osogbo, refused the bail application of the defense counsel because of the nature of the crime.

The charge sheet read had stated that the accused committed the offence at the Wolid International Service Limited company building, Fakunle area, Osogbo on June 1, 2017 by 8:00am.

According to the charge sheet, the accused person willingly and unlawfully set the company’s building on fire, contrary to and punishable under section 443(a) of the criminal code of Osun state law 2002.

The charge sheet further disclosed that Oluwatoyin stole the property of Wolid International Service company, worth N4,590,000 which is contrary to and punishable under section 390(9) of Osun state penal code.

The charge sheet unveiled that the accused intended to defraud the company by obtaining N4,590,000 under false pretense and thereby committee an offence contrary to section 1(a) and punishable under section 1(3) of the Advance fee fraud and Fraud related Offence Act 2006.

The charge sheet further disclosed that the accused intended to defraud the company of N676,545 on May 17, 2016, contrary to the Fraud related offence Act 2006.

Counsel for the accused, Abulfatai Abdulsalam prayed the court for the bail of his client, saying, his client is presumed innocent by law in line with Section 36(5) of 1999 constitution until it is proven otherwise.

The state counsel, Abiodun Badiora objected to the bail application, saying the accused person could jump bail and interfere with the police investigation since the investigation into the matter is still on.

The Magistrate consequently ordered that the accused person should be remanded in Ilesha Prison, as she adjourned the case till October 5, 2017.
