Community Leader Tortured To Death In Nigerian Military’s Detention
The Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its President-General, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, while in military detention.
Pa Oghoroko, who was arrested alongside other community leaders in August 2024, reportedly died on Wednesday, December 4, after allegedly enduring excessive torture and inhumane treatment in custody, SaharaReporters reliably gathered.
News of his demise was revealed on Thursday during an emergency meeting of Okuama community leaders. The leaders lamented the continued detention of other prominent figures, including Pa Dennis Okugbaye, who is said to be battling a life-threatening ailment in the same undisclosed military facility.
The detained leaders were arrested in connection with the aftermath of the demolition of Okuama community following the killing of 17 soldiers.

Since their arrest, they have been held without formal charges or trial. The community, through its legal team led by Chief Albert Akpomudje SAN, had filed lawsuits demanding justice and N100 million in damages for their illegal detention. Despite the legal efforts, Pa Oghoroko’s death has now added a grim twist to the ongoing crisis.
Chief Akpomudje described the death as “disturbing,” promising to consult with the late leader’s family and the legal team to determine their next course of action.
The Federal High Court in Warri had previously adjourned the bail hearing of the detained leaders to December 9, a date Pa Oghoroko tragically did not live to see.
The Okuama community has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of their leader.
