Cardoso Promises To Address Forex Stalemate And Other Newspaper Headlines

Reports of the Senate confirming Olayemi Cardoso as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dominate the front pages of the newspapers.

The Punch reports Cardoso as saying that he will prioritise clearing CBN’s backlog of unsettled foreign exchange obligations in the near term. The newspaper says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the Edo governorship election for September 21, 2024, while that of Ondo state will be held on November 16, the same year.

The Nation reports that Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, has agreed to reconcile with Philip Shaibu, his deputy, if the latter drops his ambition to run for next year’s gubernatorial election in the state. The newspaper says President Bola Tinubu has granted permission for the army to purchase 12 attack helicopters.

Daily Trust reports that Vice-President Kashim Shettima says the Nigerian economy will pick up in 15 months. The newspaper says the Gombe election tribunal has affirmed Inuwa Yahaya as the state’s duly elected governor.

The Guardian says three monarchs have been arrested in Adamawa for allegedly selling palliatives meant for their communities. The newspaper reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced an indefinite strike from October 3.

 

Daily Independent says Tinubu has urged Muslims to pray for Nigeria as his administration tries to make the economy viable. The newspaper reports that the president also promised to crush illicit drug trades nationwide.
