The Ekiti State Government has announced plans to dismiss a surgeon involved in the alleged illegal removal of a kidney from Mr. Joshua Afolayan at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the findings of an investigative panel set up 11 days ago to probe the allegation.

Filani said the panel, chaired by Prof. Francis Faduyile, recommended the immediate dismissal of the surgeon with primary responsibility for the operation. He added that all members of the surgical team present during the procedure would be suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.

The commissioner also announced that the state government would bear the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Afolayan, as well as his post-transplant care and related medical maintenance for two years.

He further disclosed that the government would embark on a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments at EKSUTH to strengthen clinical governance, accountability and patient safety.

Filani stressed that while the government supports dedicated health workers in the state, it would not hesitate to act decisively where professional and ethical standards are breached, assuring residents of continued reforms to restore public confidence in the health system.
