Activision Announces ‘Call Of Duty: World War II’

Activision officially unveiled the next Call of Duty game this morning. Call of Duty: World War II is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, the makers of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. That was a good game, and I’m excited to see what Sledgehammer can do with a World War II setting.

Prior to Advanced Warfare, the developer had been working on a Vietnam-era game which was ultimately scrapped when Activision promoted the studio to one of its three regular Call of Duty developers.

We know nothing about the game at this point beyond the setting and name. A Livestream is coming on April 26 (next Wednesday) with Sledgehammer Games co-studio heads and founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield. More will be revealed during the stream.

One way or another, a break from the inevitable push forward into space and science-fiction is welcome news. I’ve argued in the past that with three revolving studios, there’s no reason for Call of Duty to continually churn out sci-fi shooters. Why not explore past wars? Why not explore the modern warfare concept again? Sci-fi is great but it doesn’t need to be each year.

Then again, I was also looking forward to Advanced Warfare 2. Oh well. Certainly, it’s going to be cool to see the series go back to its roots, though how they’ll turn the clock back on multiplayer, with its wall-running and double-jumping, remains to be seen.

This will be an interesting year for Call of DutyI wonder if it will come to the Switch? I’m leaning toward “no,” though it would be the first viable FPS on the system. I wonder what the new, more powerful Xbox Scorpio will mean for this game also.
