Women Build Stronger Societies – Aregbesola

By Shina Abubakar

Wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo has charged women to rededicate themselves towards building a sane society, where progress and development would thrive.

She made the charge at the flag-off of a two-day conference organised by Osun Officials’ Wives  Association with the theme, Virtuous Woman: “Pushing for Greater Development”, for women across the state.

She disclosed that women have been neglecting their societal responsibility of raising youth that would enhance the good-better-best of the society, which now result to the different social vices constituting menace to the nation.

She called on the womenfolk to always examine the role they have been playing with a view to reviewing their societal-expected responsibility and work towards building a crisis-free community, where people can thrive in all endeavours they venture into.

She urged women to always strive for greater development as human beings are by nature insatiable, hence,  the need to continue to work towards eradicating these social vices and ensuring peace and development in all spheres of human endeavours across the country.

She also urged women to make sure their children are not just trained to possess academic certificates alone, but to also make sure they are complete human beings with all the necessary traditional and moral values which could help build a virile nation where peace and tranquility shall be of utmost importantance.

In his remarks, Governor, State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola described women as the hand that rocks the cradle and they rule the world, but quickly added that the womenfolk need to help their husbands and children to be virtuous as they are the needed machinery to build a better society.

“Every leader as well as followers were born of a woman and their personalities are influenced by the woman, hence mothers should strive to help men and children to build a Godly character and be a virtuous person. Mothers should strive to inculcate in children the values of productivity, dignity of labour, value of money and thinking.

He emphasised the need to instill orderliness and productive virtues into the youth which unfortunately is missing in the attitude of Nigerians and without orderliness, the Governor added that a nation would not achieve any significant development.

“Mothers must instill in their children the sense of performing their civic responsibilities, to defend the country when the need arises, pay their taxes, be politically active and most importantly sow the seed of peace.

They must eschew corruption as this spreads poverty, thus bringing hardship for the masses.

The seed of peace is very important because it is the only way to build a society free of chaos, war as it is a means to achieve growth and development”, the Governor added.

Earlier in her welcome address, the chairperson of the association and wife of the Governor,  Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola disclosed that the objectives of the gathering was to further enlarge the frontiers of human development and equip women with adequate knowledge to help in the all round development of the state.

“Our development focus is to embrace skills acquisition and training and economic empowerment, creation of awareness and intervention in critical health-related issues, civic and development policy advocacy among others.

Similar associations has attained a lot of mileage in our sister states.  This is a good development which promises to create a stronger bond and enhances integration among women in the South West”, she added.
