Drama As Senate Plenary Turns Valentine Celebration Venue

According to The PUNCH, The Valentine’s Day celebration hit the Senate chamber in a dramatic form on Wednesday.

The day’s plenary began on a dramatic note when the Majority Whip, Senator Sola Adeyeye, was calling members of the chamber to order for the session to start properly.

Adeyeye called the attention of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to three senators – Dino Melaye, Oluremi Tinubu and Monsurat Sunmonu – who were in red to reflect the Valentine’s mood.

Celebrators of the day are usually dressed in red and white.

The Chief Whip said, “Senator Oluremi Tinubu from Lagos-Central; the original ‘Ajekun iya’ from Kogi-West, Senator Dino Melaye; and from from Oyo-Central, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu are reflecting the Valentine’s spirit. The chamber is now set for today’s session.”

Opening the session, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said, “Thank you, the Chief Whip, for your observation.”

Saraki later asked Melaye to move a motion for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings of the last legislative day (Tuesday).

Doing so, Melaye said he was moving the motion himself and in collaboration with Tinubu.

Saraki then asked Tinubu to second the motion, saying, “Ranking Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Valentine’s of the chamber.”

Rising to second the motion, Tinubu said, “Mr. President, thank you for inviting me but I should be the one to move the motion because, one, I’m a ranking senator, senior to your beloved son (Melaye).”

She accused Saraki of being partial as she was the best dressed. According to her, paper from the touch of red on their dresses, her dress particularly had red rose prints on it.

“If you look at me, I have roses all over but he doesn’t even have a single rose. But since I am not your son, I will still gladly second the motion as ably moved by your beloved son.”

Melaye was dressed in red jacked, black pant and black bow tie; Tinubu was in a black gown made of Ankara fabric with patches of rose together with a red scalf; Sunmonu was in a formal red dress with black collar.

Valentine: Fake Condoms Flood Markets

With less than 9 hours to the Valentine’s Day, stakeholders have expressed concerns about the alleged presence of fake condoms in the market.

Physicians believe that when used properly, condoms can prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

The presence of fake condoms in the market is thus a cause for concern, especially as the Valentine’s Day is just a few hours away.

As reported by Standard Media, fake condoms have hit the Kenyan market, even as the world marks the International Condom Day today (Tuesday, February 13).

This information was contained in a warning issued by the Population Services Kenya.

In an advert placed in the local dailies, PS Kenya issued a directive to the public to be aware of the appropriate labeling of the Trust Studded brand of condoms.

“Look out for the marks of quality on our packs to ensure that you are purchasing authentic Trust packs,” cautioned the advert.

PS Kenya, which distributes Trust Condoms, have been carrying out a three-day country-wide safety sensitisation campaign since February 10.

They say that the presence of fake condoms in the market puts consumers at risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases, since they are made from substandard materials.

The agency, in half-page adverts in the middle of local dailies, asked members of the public to look out for the authentic package in the Studded product.

According to the advert, consumers should check the front face of a pack of Trust Studded to ensure that it has a triple-tested icon on the bottom left side and a white stripe with pack content.

The name “Studded” should also appear in bold at the centre of the pack. The pack’s spine should bear content details and only bear PS-Kenya contact details and nothing more.

Condoms — latex and polyurethane versions — have been the only method available to prevent transmission of STIs and HIV for ages.

The alarm comes just as the world is marking the International Condom Day, which is promoted by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in an effort to reduce the spread of HIV through safe sex practices.

Girls, February 14 Could Derail Your Destiny By Temilolu Okeowo

My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,

I can read your mind on this topic. Your thoughts are likely to be “Hmm…Aunty Temi has come again o!” Yes, I have come again to declutter your heart on what may have a negative influence on your life and set you on a ruinous path.

Valentine’s Day is usually celebrated by lovers all over the world on February 14. If you asked me, I’d say you have no business “carrying it on your head.” Right now, a lot of you are heartbroken that your greatest love or crush isn’t sparing you a thought for that day, some of you are giddy with excitement at the gift you are getting from your lover, some of you have stolen money from your parents to buy gifts, while some of you can’t wait to have your first kiss. Some of you can’t even wait to taste the forbidden fruit on that day and get deflowered! How I pity you, your parents and your future about to be stolen by the devil because of some silly feeling. To worsen matters, a good number of private schools also encourage the celebration of Valentine’s Day. I read about a 5-year-old girl in Lagos whose request during her family morning devotion was that God should let a certain boy in her class choose her as his valentine! Can you imagine that? Encouraging crazy thoughts of love in a 5-year-old; if you asked me, I’d say that’s child abuse!

In your impressionable and teen age, you have so much energy, passion and gusto to do everything you fancy. You have a vivid imagination and an enormous power to do exploit. Now, what happens when all this energy is channelled towards the wrong things? Did you know that your teen years are the years that will determine how your entire life would go? Did you know your childhood dreams of achieving extraordinary feats are seeds of greatness sowed into you by God? Did you know that the devil – our common enemy targets bright stars in their teens and confuses them so they can never fulfil their glorious destiny? And guess what? We are all stars, distinguished with different sterling qualities to shine amongst billions in the world and leave our footprints on the sands of time.

Even if you are facing so much hardship in life today because of your parent’s financial inadequacies, do you or your parents have the faintest idea of the magnitude of your greatness in future if only you can concentrate all of your energy on your innate skills and talents?

I’ve emphasised over and over again that having a romantic relationship in your teenage years is a huge distraction, in fact a satanic one. Your teen age is the most delicate and important in your entire life. It is the age when you should lay a solid foundation for the future academically, spiritually and psychologically and sadly, a lot of parents are not helping matters. Those who wish to help matters are further frustrated by the madness of the social media. It is normal for you to have a crush in your early teens because you are becoming aware of the world around you and are generally curious about everything and also want to experiment, but you shouldn’t allow it to grow. It would cause you sleepless nights, affect your grades and before you know it, your heart gets broken and who knows what that may cause? Who knows if you are destined to shine as a medical doctor then your heartbreak gives you low grades which push you to the Arts class! Am I making sense?

Just because a boy you fancy has threatened to dump you and “val” another girl in your class because you don’t want to have sex with him, you have finally decided to let him have his way this weekend so you won’t miss out on being his valentine! Good grief! See, no matter what your G.O. tells you, once that happens; your life can never be the same again. In fact, your life will be opened up to demonic invasion. Once a life has been contaminated or polluted by sexual intercourse with the wrong person, it can only take the special intervention and mercy of God to live a trouble-free life and fulfil destiny. Why the rush? Why don’t you make the most of now, preserve your purity, virtues, your energy and gather enormous power that would make you one of a very special kind in the world and then have enough wisdom and spiritual intelligence to marry the best man in the world and enjoy all the sex like there’s nothing else to do! May God open up your understanding!

Indonesia Launches anti-Valentine’s Day Condom Raids

Indonesian authorities raided convenience stores and seized condoms in a major city to stop teenagers having casual sex on Valentine’s Day, an official said Tuesday, the latest crackdown on the holiday in the Muslim-majority nation.

The mayor of Makassar, a conservative city on central Sulawesi island, led public order officers in the raids late Monday on the eve of the celebration.

Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto said he was not against the sale of condoms but that outlets needed to be careful about whom they were sold to.

“Valentine’s Day is often misused by teenagers to have casual sex, this can destroy the morality of the nation,” he was quoted as saying in local media.

Iman Hud — head of the local public officers, similar to police but with fewer powers — told AFP that convenience stores had been failing to check teenagers’ IDs to see whether they were at least 18 years old, the age of consent, before selling them condoms.

“We are doing this to prevent promiscuity,” he said, adding that hundreds of condoms were seized in the raids in the city of 1.3 million.

It was the latest expression of anger at Valentine’s Day in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, where Islamic clerics and some pious Muslims use the occasion to criticise what they see as Western decadence.

On Monday teenage pupils, including girls in headscarves, staged a protest outside a school in the city of Surabaya, chanting: “Say no to Valentine!”

Celebrating the romantic holiday has also been banned by authorities in some parts of the country, as it is every year.

MURIC Condemns Distribution Of Condoms On Valentine’s Day

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AHF, on Sunday 14th February, 2016 distributed 500,000 units of condom across different locations of Abuja to commemorate Valentine’s Day. The Foundation also organized concurrent distribution in six states in Nigeria and 36 countries worldwide.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) strongly condemns this action. It is not only misleading but wrongly timed.

Apart from the promotion of sexual licentiousness, public and indiscriminate distribution of condoms to both married and single individuals (including secondary school students) on Valentine’s Day is both a disservice to history and a dishonor to St. Valentine himself.

MURIC wishes to straighten the records in view of this crude attempt to distort history. The proper way to mark Valentine’s Day is to mount a strong campaign against premarital sex in particular and sexual promiscuity in general. This is based on the fact that St. Valentine himself died fighting against these societal evils.

Students of history will recall that Emperor Claudius outlawed marriage in the 5th century and forcefully conscripted young men into the army. Sexual recklessness followed the issuance of this decree. St. Valentine confronted the emperor’s draconian decree and joined young men and women in marriages in order to bring sanity back to society. He was subsequently arrested and executed on 14th February, 270 C. E.

It is therefore an attempt to distort history for any group to mark the day by distributing condoms. Valentine’s Day is not a day for encouraging young girls to lose their virginity. It is not a day to promote fantasies and secretive datings. All these lead to fornication, adultery and the attendant pains of abortion, teenage pregnancy, single motherhood and irresponsible parentage.

St. Valentine can be better honoured and productively remembered by mounting a campaign against premarital sex, encouraging preference for marriage to immoral relationship, showcasing the beauty of the institution of marriage as opposed to celibacy, promoting family values, and highlighting responsible parentage.

By the same token, we opine that the distribution of condoms gratis to the public as a way of fighting HIV and AIDS is sheer window-dressing. Those who are genuinely interested in stopping the AIDS scourge are advised to strike at the roots. Indecent and provocative dressing among women is at the root of sexual recklessness in society. Any country which succeeds in controlling this phenomenon will find it easy to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases to their barest minimum.

In conclusion, we remind Nigerians that every single habit in society is a parameter for judging its people, its present as well as its future. We owe it a duty to check today’s immoral practices to avoid descent into the abyss of Sodom and Gomorrah. We charge religious leaders to focus on the reorientation of moral values in general and the reengineering of sexual perceptions in particular.
