Members of the public have been cautioned against the practice of indiscriminate use of drugs. This advise was given recently by the Director of Medical Services in Osun State Hospital Management Board and Chairman of the State Drug Abuse Control Committee, Dr. Bosun Awoyemi, at a rally organized by his committee to sensitize the public to the dangers of drug abuse.
According to Awoyemi, problems like destruction of kidneys, abnormal resistance to medical treatments and premature deaths are some of the danger inherent in the indiscriminate use of drugs abuse.
He stated further that self medication, especially by female teenagers to terminate unwanted pregnancy is another course of untimely death.
Awoyemi warned that it was high time all stake holders joined the campaign against the illegal act.
He disclosed that earlier in the year, the state was ranked among the highest vulnerable states to drug abuse in the country by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
“The NDLEA has been up and doing in its fight against drug peddles across the country”, adding that it is the duty of every one in the state to tackle the social malaise.
It would be recalled that the NDLEA recently swooped on Indian hemp farmers in Ada, a town in Boripe local government area.
He stated further that indiscriminate consumption of drugs, self medication and unlicensed drug dispense have degenerating effect on the life expectance of youths and the nation’s work productivity.
