Osogbo National Students Union Get New EXCOS

Osogbo National Students Union (ONSU), has elected new executives with Comrade Gbadebo Lukman as the new President while Abdul Kareem Sodiq emerged as the General Secretary.

Lukman was declared President of ONSU at the annual convention of the students body held on Sunday at the Palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun in Osogbo, State of Osun capital.

In the keenly contested election, Comrade Gbadebo polled 96 votes out of 219 total votes cast to defeat two other contestants, Comrade Yusuf Idowu who scored 36 votes and Comrade Adewale Alabi who got 76 votes. While 11 votes were rejected.

Comrade Oladeji Hammed was also voted ONSU PRO having garnered 100 votes to beat his co-contestant, Comrade Adetoro Hafeez who scored 96 votes, just as twenty three votes were rejected.

Other ONSU executives who were elected unopposed are; Comrade Olarenwaju Rofiat (Lefty) as vice president; Comrade Olaboye Olalekan as Assistant General Secretary; Comrade Agboola Nafisat as Treasurer; Comrade Sulaiman Zeenat as Social Director; Comrade Adepoju Kazeem as Sports Director;

The rest include; Comrade Yusuf Ayatullahi who defeated Comrade Ayuba Mutiu with 142 votes to 60 votes to emerge as ONSU new Librarian; Oyedele Kabir also defeated Badmus Rasheed with a vote of 105 to 103 to emerge as the new Welfare Director; Ibrahim Moshood defeated Baruwa Saheed with a vote of 105 to 96 to become ONSU new financial secretary.

A total of 219 delegates across the 55 recognised higher institutions across the country were accredited for the election.

While announcing the results of the election, the Chairman, Electoral Committee, Comrade Muritala Saheed , described the conduct of the poll as peaceful, free fair and credible.

Muritala thanked the students for their peaceful conduct before, during and after the election.

The NAOSS outgoing President, Comrade Adeyemi Idris, congratulated the new President on his victory at the poll, emphasising that his dream of having a free, fair peaceful and credible ONSU election has been achieved.

According to him, his administration has set a good precedence that subsequent administrations should follow.

Adeyemi also appreciated the entire delegates for their peaceful conduct throughout the exercise.

Speaking some minutes after he was declared winner of the election, the new President of ONSU, Comrade Gbadebo, a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU) who stormed the Ataoja Palace with his supporters expressed his gratitude to all the delegates for giving him the opportunity and privilege to serve.

He promised that during his tenure the association would witness positive and effective change, noting that he was ready to use the mandate given to him to bring a difference.

The new President also promised to work with his co-contestants to move the association to a greater height.

Also speaking, Mr. Olaitan Asimiyu , an observer who spoke on behalf of other observers expressed satisfaction with the peaceful way the election was conducted and challenged politicians to emulate the poll, explaining that the election was “devoid of rancour, fighting and abusive words”.

The new executives will run the affairs of the apex students’ association for the next one year.

The election was conducted under the close supervision of the security personnel as well as electoral observers.
