EDITORIAL: Making The Right Choice

ANYTHING coming from former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be assessed with circumspection. He and the military mindset of the ‘class of 1966’ have been a part of the problem. We are not too certain as to the role they can make in finding a solution.

Nevertheless, there are times when it is compelling to ignore the messenger and concentrate on the message. A few days ago, the crusty Owu chief stated that the choice made in next year’s presidential election will make or mar the republic. He is in this admonition making a statement of the obvious. 

The country, to say the list, is at a critical junction. The program put on offer to the Nigerian people will be of existential importance. Disappointingly, it has all been uninspiring so far. There has been an absurd fixation on ephemeral personalities rather than on the efficacy of programs. 

This has to stop. At this moment, the country needs a detailed program of social and economic reconstruction backed by the necessary constitutional adjustments to translate it into enduring paradigm shifts. 

When campaigns officially kick off next month, the electorate must insist on a focus on programs. This is the only way out
