Basis For Geometric Progression In Number Of Governorship Candidates In Osun

From the table on front page, the gubernatorial candidates that contested for the seat of government in Osun in 2007 were 14 in number. In 2011, there was no election in the state because Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola couldn’t complete his second term in office. The court of appeal in Ibadan nullified his election and declared Governor Rauf Aregbesola as the newly elected governor of the state in November 2010.  In 2014, the number of candidates that made a bid to occupy the seat reduced to 10.

In 2018, just a period of four years to 2014, the number increased in a geometric progression from 10 to 48 candidates, the highest record  in the history of gubernatorial contest since the creation of the state and even in Nigeria as a whole.

What could have accounted for this astronomical increase in the turnover of the candidates vying for Osun gubernatorial seat?.

The answer is not far-fetched. It could  not be divorced from the fact that the present government under the leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has made the seat a darling of all in the last 8years.

Ogbeni has raised the bar of governance with super infrastructure development and social well being of the people.
