Arsenal has missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 20 years despite defeating Everton 3-1 at the Emirates on Sunday.

Liverpool and Manchester City’s victories rendered the Gunners’ 3-1 triumph irrelevant as Arsene Wenger’s side end the season in fifth place.

The last time the Gunners missed out on the top four was in the 1995/96 season when Bruce Rioch was in charge at Highbury.

Next season will be the first time that Arsenal will not play in the Champions League since the 1997/98 season when the Premier League had only two places in Europe’s premier club competition.

They North London side will play in the Europa League next season as Liverpool return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2014/15 season.

Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City and the Reds are the English teams that will play Champions League football next season.

Arsenal will be joined by Everton and Manchester United in the Europa League if the latter fails to win the tournament to earn automatic Champions League qualification.
