In line with his promise to relieve parents and students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) of their heavy burden and promote functional education, Osun State governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has reduced the outrageous tuition fees of the institution.
Aregbesola, on Tuesday approved the tuition fees downward review between 42 and 52 percent being paid by the students of the state-owned tertiary institutions.
According to a press statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Sunday Akere, the reduction takes effect from September 19, 2011.
The state government has also ordered immediate refund to the students who had paid the old exorbitant tuition fees.
Aregbesola also pledged to refund all the excess funds belonging to UNIOSUN, which were deducted from the tuition fees and kept in a savings account.
Students of the Faculty of Law and their counterparts in Medicine would pay a flat tuition of N100, 000 each against the N195, 000 being charged by the defunct administration of the ousted Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
The tuition fees of the students offering non-science courses has been reduced from the sum of  N130, 000 to N75, 000, representing 42 percent reduction.
Fifty-two percent reduction has reflected on the tuition fees of students offering science courses, as they are to henceforth pay N75,000 instead of the sum N155, 000.
Akere further said the reduction became imperative for the state government in order to bring succour to the students of the state-owned university and their poor parents.
The commissioner maintained that Aregbesola’s administration is poised to promote functional education and make it accessible for the children of the masses.
He however reiteratedthat the reduction in the tuition fees would not in any way affect the quality and academic excellence of the institution.
