Oredegbe Farmers Association; Ifetuntun in Ife-South Local Government Council Area of Osun State has commended the administration of Mr Rauf Aregbesola for the establishment of Osun Rural Enterprises and Agricultural Programme (OREAP) and described it as a right step in a right direction, which will boost agricultural production in the state.
The chairman of the Association, Mr Johnson Adeyinka, made this known in a chat with OSUN DEFENDER in Ifetedo last Tuesday.
He said that the effort of the state government to revamp the economy of the state through massive food production and cash crop production would not only boost the economy of the state but addresses hunger issues in the society.
The renowned farmer however, cautioned the state government on giving loans to cooperative farmers, warning that the loans might end in wrong hands.
He continued that the “desk farmers” might succeed in having the loans more than practising farmers. Adeyinka hinted that his past experience had shown that desk farmers often succeeded in having the loans, while the real farmers only watched helplessly, since they do not form cooperative groups or literate as well.
Mr Adetinkan also revealed that most of the practising farmers, especially in Ife South Local Government Council Area were cash crop farmers; he then queried how the programme intends to cater for them.
He added that most of the farmers plant food crops as well, but the terrain and typographical nature of the area, being rain forest, could make the use of tractors for planting and cultivation slightly difficult.
But he counseled that the state government should make insecticide and other chemicals available for cocoa and cash crop farmers during the raining season.
He also advocated that the state government should provide means of transportation, so as to move farm produce from remote parts of the council area to all the main towns across the state and even beyond.
