12 Corpses Burnt As Inferno Razes OAU Morgue

About 12 corpses have been reported burnt in an early hour fire outbreak that razed the morgue of Anatomy Department of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Osun State on Tuesday.

Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olanrewaju, in a statement confirmed the incident.

He said about 102 bodies were kept in the morgue when the fire caused by power surge started around 3 :00 am Tuesday, but 12 of the bodies were affected.

According to him, the timely intervention of the men of Security and Fire Services Unit of the university put the situation under control .

The statement reads , “the fire, which broke out at 3:00 am today , (Tuesday , 19 th November 2019 ) was caused by electricity surge which affected a section of the Morgue where corpses are kept. Out of about 102 bodies that are kept in the Morgue, 12 were affected by the fire outbreak .

“The department has made detailed arrangements to duly and adequately inform those who have kept bodies (corpses) in the morgue ”.

According to Olanrewaju, Vice -Chancellor , Prof . Eyitope Ogunbodede and other principal officers had visited the scene to assess the level of damage and instructed immediate repairs to the affected areas .

“The VC has also constituted a three-member committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the fire outbreak , ” Olanrewaju concluded .

Spokesperson for Osun Police Command, Folasade Odoro said, the detectives from the command were already investigating the cause of the incident.
